  Continuing Professional Development

General
The Continuing Professional Development Regulations currently apply to all barristers who commenced practice on or after 1 October 1997 (see para 202 & Annex C of the Code of Conduct).

A barrister in independent practice commenced practice on the first day on which he/she practised after completion of their second six month pupillage.
Third six month pupils and squatters have therefore commenced practice for the purposes of the Code of Conduct.

For the purposes of the Code, practising barristers are barristers who, in connection with the offer or supply of legal services, hold or allow themselves to be held out as barristers or exercise a right which they have by reason of being a barrister: (see para 201).
