  Education

All pupils are required to complete the following courses:

Chambers Courses

In-House Advocacy
These are mandatory sessions organised by the silk and junior in charge of advocacy. They are assessed and should be taken very seriously. You will receive work to prepare for these sessions 24 hours before each session. Ryan Richter will organise and introductory talk within your first couple of weeks.

Westminster City Council Lecture
This is a mandatory lecture run by John McGuinness QC and Timothy Spencer to prepare you for work for WCC which you are likely to do during your 2nd six. It is held in Chambers on a day that will be notified to you. This work is important to Chambers and careful note should be taken of the content of the lecture and the lecture handout as the work is esoteric and complex.

POCA lecture(s)
This is a mandatory lecture on the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 run by Michael Birnbaum QC, Stuart Biggs and (if available) Nicola Padfield. It is held in Chambers on a day that will be notified to you. Attendance on a certified course on the effects of POCA 2002 is encouraged by the Director of Public Prosecutions for all those who undertake CPS work.

External Courses

Inns of Court Advocacy
These courses are held either over 2 weeks (Middle Temple) or on residential weekends. They are mandatory and must be booked through the education department of your Inn without delay.

Advice to counsel
This is a mandatory one day course. It can be booked through the Bar Council. You will receive a booking form on registration of your pupillage. Funding for this course will be provided by Chambers. Please contact Keith Secker (Chambers Administrator) to arrange payment.

ECHR course
This is currently a mandatory course lasting two days. The CPS and Bar Council are reviewing the course and it may disappear. The Bar Council will contact you with the latest position after you have registered your pupillage. For so long as the course is mandatory Chambers' policy is to provide funding for it. Please ask Keith Secker (Chambers Administrator) to arrange payment which will be made by Chambers. Attendance on this course is a prerequisite to carrying out prosecution work.

Forensic Accounting (a course lasting three days, optional during pupillage - mandatory during first 3 years of practice).
Attendance on this course is not funded by Chambers. It is a matter for you whether you attend the course during pupillage or at a later stage. Many pupils find it helpful to undertake it in their first six so as not to lose 3 day's work.
