20/03/2008 Philip Katz QC was elected Head of Chambers
Philip Katz QC was elected Head of Chambers in succession to Lord Carlile QC, who remains in practice at 9-12 Bell Yard.

14/03/2008 Chambers is delighted to welcome 3 new tenants: David Smith, Lawrence Henderson and Amy Mannion.
Both David Smith (called 1998) and Lawrence Henderson (called 1990) are very well established criminal practitioners who both prosecute and defend in serious cases across the criminal calendar. David is on the Preferred Counsel list for the Serious Fraud Office and has recently led for the defence in a murder case. Lawrence is a Grade 4 prosecutor on the CPS London Panel of External Advocates, whilst his recent defence work has focused on sexual crime and child abuse in London, Sussex and Kent. Amy Mannion (call 2003) joins us on successful completion of pupillage and following an intensive secondment to the Extradition Unit (Special Crime Division, Crown Prosecution Service). She hopes to specialise in extradition and regulatory work.

06/03/2008 Mark Bryant-Heron and Jonathan Kinnearr
In February Mark Bryant-Heron and Jonathan Kinnear successfully prosecuted the seventh in a series of trials in the linked HMRC Operations Capri and Devout. First instructed by the Revenue and Customs Prosecution Office (RCPO) in 2002 the cases involved an attack on the Revenue through the use of Missing Trader Intra Community (MTIC) VAT frauds, and the subsequent money laundering, which caused a loss to the Revenue of in excess of £150 million. The recent convictions bring the number of defendants convicted to 37 and are the culmination of almost 6 years work. Mark is standing counsel to RCPO and Jonathan is a member of the Attorney General’s “A” list of preferred advocates.

Jonathan Kinnear has been appointed as a member of the Bar Standards Board (BSB) Complaints Committee. The BSB is the independent regulatory board of the Bar Council, responsible for regulating barristers called to the Bar in England and Wales. The Complaints Committee is responsible for investigating complaints and taking action against barristers who have breached the Code of Conduct or provided poor service

05/03/2008 Johannah Cutts
Chambers is delighted to congratulate Johannah Cutts on her greatly deserved appointment as Queen's Counsel which will take effect in March. Called in 1986, Johannah has defended and prosecuted in all fields of crime. She is renowned for her expertise in cases of sexual assault and those involving vulnerable witnesses, both as an advocate and as a lecturer to the Criminal Bar Association and the Judicial Studies Board.

05/03/2008 Michael Birnbaum QC and Jason Sugarman
Michael Birnbaum QC and Jason Sugarman have obtained leave to appeal for Paul Gallagher, convicted in 2001 of the murder of his baby son. Much of their argument focuses on recent advances in medical research on shaken baby syndrome.

The updater to the 3rd edition of Rook & Ward on Sexual Offences has now been published. Alexandra Ward wrote the chapters dealing with “Vulnerable Witnesses” and “Sexual Offences Committed Against Those with a Mental Disorder.”

06/12/2007 Michael Birnbaum QC
On 6 December Michael Birnbaum QC obtained leave to appeal to the Privy Appeal for Ronald John, a death row prisoner convicted of murder in Trinidad.

31/10/2007 Mohammed Khamisa QC
Mohammed Khamisa QC has been appointed as Legal Assessor to the General Medical Council. This compliments his work as the President of the Mental Health Review Tribunal and Recorder.

Patrick Curran QC has been appointed a Circuit Judge and will sit at Cardiff Crown Court.

30/08/2007 Michael Birnbaum QC has continued his busy appellate practice
In June he appeared for Paul Mackin who challenged his convictions for serious assault after a reference by the Criminal Cases Review Commission. In July his submissions to the Court of Appeal in the case of S and others led to the quashing of the convictions of 6 men (including 4 convicted of murder).

In pending Court of Appeal cases He represents both John Roden, whose convictions for double murder have recently been referred by the CCRC and Paul Gallagher, who is appealing his conviction for the murder of his baby son. He has just settled a petition to the Privy Council for Ronald John who was convicted of capital murder and is on Death Row in Trinidad.
