Human Rights

Human rights issues permeate much of what we do at 9-12 Bell Yard. Many of our cases involve human rights considerations, whether in the criminal or civil spheres of our work, and members of these chambers are well known for their work in the human rights field. Members have acted in applications to the European Court of Human Rights, and a number have been involved in the litigation relating both to Guantanamo Bay and to Iraqi civilian claims against the MoD.

Many members appear pro bono in appeals before the Privy Council, often in capital cases, and some members also have experience of acting in death row cases in the USA. Our members have been involved in numerous terrorism-linked and control order cases, and Lord Carlile QC, the former Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation, is a member of Chambers.
