R v. Laverty and others . Instructed by the defence in an incest and rape case involving a family in Hertfordshire. The case was the biggest case prosecuted by Luton CPS. There was a complicated history with social services and the judge eventually refused to allow the case to go before the jury as the police had not followed the guidelines on best practice with vulnerable witnesses.
Jason recently acted for the Suffolk Police in a death in custody inquest and advised the Assistant Chief Constable of Kent in a disciplinary tribunal.
Stirland Inquest - Lincoln. Jason represented five Superintendants in a Coroner's Inquest into the deaths of John and Joan Stirland. This case involved an investigation into their deaths as a consequence of a contract killing by rival gangs in Nottinghamshire. The Police Force had been accused of a number of failings including a failure to disseminate intelligence and evidence of police corruption. This was one of the most complex Inquests ever heard and involved witnesses from two police forces.
R v. Majid and others - Operation Euripus, 2003 2009. Part of a team that prosecuted for HMRC in the largest ever mobile telephone intra-community VAT fraud. Over £200 million loss to the Exchequer. 16 defendants were prosecuted in this fraud. Evidence was obtained from Dubai, Spain and Hong Kong.
R v. MacDonald and Ralph. Successfully prosecuted for the CPS a cheque cross firing fraud involving fraud of £1 million involving the racing car industry.
R v. Gallagher. Instructed by the defence in a Court of Appeal case led by Michael Birnbaum QC. Instructed after Mr. Gallagher had been convicted for the murder of his baby son and sentenced to life imprisonment. Leave to appeal was granted and a full retrial ordered. Changes in the medical expert evidence dealing with shaken baby cases resulted in a plea to manslaughter.
R v. Harris and Hassell. Led by Edmund Lawson QC and instructed for the defence in the largest investigation by the FSA into allegations of insider dealing and market abuse. The investigation took four years and over 40,000 telephone calls were transcribed. There was evidence from Malta and Switzerland. Advice was given throughout the early stages. The case was dropped by the FSA after careful pre-charge advice.
Instructed by the Nigerian Government via Kendall Freeman (solicitors) in a civil confiscation case involving state governors who had stolen state funds and repatriated it to London.
