William is a criminal law specialist, although he also undertakes local government, disciplinary tribunal and inquiry work.

 

Criminal Work

Defence

Fraud specialist, including wide experience of VAT and Revenue fraud, fraudulent trading, money laundering and related confiscation proceedings.

 

Specialist in drug related crime, and resultant drug trafficking and Criminal Justice Act, Drug Trafficking Act and Proceeds of Crime Act confiscation proceedings.

 

Wide experience of general crime, including serious violent assaults and sexual offences, particularly those cases with vulnerable defendants and witnesses.

 

Considerable experience representing the interests of serving police officers in criminal allegations, internal disciplinary tribunals and inquests.

 

Prosecution

Regularly instructed by the CPS, in particular SOCA prosecutions on behalf of the CPS Organised Crime Division, RCPO, Westminster City Council and other local authorities, Ofcom and the Royal Mail.

 

Wide experience in drug prosecutions, including related Proceeds Of Crime Act and Drug Trafficking Act civil and criminal legislation.

 

Considerable experience of all confiscation and cash seizure legislation, including representing the Commissioners in the Divisional Court. (Pruijsen v. Commissioners of Customs and Excise (18/10/99 CO/1843/99.)

 

Miscellaneous

Disciplinary Tribunals: Regularly appears in police disciplinary tribunals, both defending and presenting since the early 1990s.

R v. Sexton and others - Reading Crown Court, October 2009. Successful defence of defendant charged with conspiracies to rob (robberies of cash handling security staff) and burglaries. (Conspiracy to supply class 'C' drugs to be tried.) (National publicity.)

R v. Dickson - Lewes Crown Court, October 2009. Historic rape and sexual abuse of hospital inmate with borderline personality disorder.

R v. James and others - Southampton Crown Court, May 2009. Successful defence of allegation of conspiracy to obtain property by deception after successful submission at close of prosecution's case. Note: prosecution appeal of terminatory ruling to be heard in November 2009.

R v. C - Harrow Crown Court, January 2009. Successful defence of inter-marital rape and grievous bodily harm.

R v. P Rooney - November 2008. Junior (with Mohammed Khamisa QC) for defendant responsible for fatal M25 coach crash.

R v. G Rooney - Reading Crown Court, October-November 2008. Multi- handed violent disorder, grievous bodily harm.

R v. Parkinson - Canterbury Crown Court, November 2007. Defendant acquitted of large-scale importation. Unusual combination of defences (duress and "cut-throat" of paramilitary co-defendant).

R v. Imran - Reading Crown Court, September-November 2007. Leading junior for defendant successfully acquitted of conspiracy to supply class 'A' drugs.

R v. Griffin - Southwark Crown Court, June-July 2007. Defence of ex police officer charged with corruption and misconduct in public office with two others.

R v. JB - Inner London Crown Court, June 2007. Successful defence of 13-year-old charged with rape of minors.

R v. Todd - Reading Crown Court, January 2004. Defendant and his brothers' committed a series of armed robberies, including holding up police and taking police vehicles.

R v. Loach - Blackfriars Crown Court, September 2003. Junior in successful defence (with Michael Egan) of alleged complex, multi-million pound fraud.

R v. Weekes and others - Kingston Crown Court, 2010. Instructed in multi-agency investigated, large-scale international drug conspiracy.

R v. West Jarrett and Spence - Southwark Crown Court, 2009-10. Instructed in ongoing alleged drug money financed mortgage fraud.

R v. Bale and others - Croydon Crown Court, 2009. Prosecution on behalf of SOCA of money laundering and perverting the course of justice. (Confiscation proceedings ongoing.)

R v. Van Helsdingen and Lowe - Kingston Crown Court, 2009. Prosecution of multi-agency international large-scale South African passport fraud. (Case included one of first uses of restricted use undertaking per SOCPA.)

R v. Erinle - Maidstone Crown Court, 2009. Complex £1 million plus fraud. Confiscation proceedings ongoing.

R v. Newman - Canterbury Crown Court, March 2009. Historic sexual abuse.

R v. A - Hove Crown Court, January 2009. Historic familial sexual abuse.

R v. Smith, Yates and others - Canterbury Crown Court, June 2008. Prosecution of multi-defendant class 'A' drug importation, and resultant confiscation proceedings.

R v. Cook - Chichester Crown Court, March 2008. Successful prosecution of child neglect.

R v. Chohan and others - Birmingham Crown Court, 2004-2008. Prosecution junior (with Mukul Chawla QC) in three related multi-defendant trials.

. £1/2 million Excise fraud.

. £100 million MTIC VAT fraud.

. Laundering (prosecution of professional man (AN) and his sister, wife of first defendant for laundering).

(£28 million confiscation order obtained against defendant fleeing jurisdiction. Also dealt with all other aspects of confiscation.)

R v. Uddin and others (Operation Venison) Southwark Crown Court, 2002-2004. Prosecution junior in then largest ever (£125 million) MTIC VAT fraud.

R v. Hoare, Pierce and others - Lewes Crown Court, March-April 2003. Prosecution junior in large-scale drug manufacturing case.

R v. Black and others (Operation Quarrells) Croydon Crown Court, January and July 2001. Prosecution junior (with Mukul Chawla QC) of multi-handed conspiracy to import class 'A' drugs.

Re Leon Patterson [Deceased] - Manchester Coroner's Court, October 1996. Acted on behalf of 40 police officers in death in custody inquest.
