Practice Areas and Specialisations

Kaly specialises in heavy-weight criminal defence work. As a leading junior she has built an excellent reputation defending. Her experience includes high value fraud, the importation and supply of drugs, offences of serious violence and murder. She has been leading since 1997.

 

More recently Kaly has been instructed to prosecute in complex multi-complainant, multi-handed cases concerning historic child abuse and offences of a sensitive nature. She has been appointed to the List of Counsel to prosecute rape for the CPS.

 

In addition to her busy practise, she has represented individuals accused of and threatened with prosecution for crimes against humanity and war crimes in this country, including providing representation in extradition proceedings.

R v. Cox. Part of the "Robinsons" series of trials involving legal aid fraud, trials lasting over 4 years. (Leading counsel)

Serious Crime

R v. Lennie McLean. Representing the "bare knuckle" boxer, author of  "Guvnor" and inspiration for the film "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.", at his trial for murder in 1992 at the Central Criminal Court. (Junior counsel)

R v. Susan Richards. Part of the "Michael Michaels" series of trials, involving the well known "Supergrass". (Junior counsel)

R v. Horncy and others. The "Chohan murders" involving the murder of five persons from the same family, the longest murder trial at the Central Criminal Court.  (Junior counsel)

R v. White. Winchester Crown Court.  Large drug importation case lasting a year. (Junior counsel)

R v. Mehinder Kaur. Elderly female defendant accused of falsely imprisoning her daughter in law for 18 months.

R v. Magloire, 2010. Historic case involving the most serious of sexual allegations against four brothers by eight complainants. (Leading counsel)

Reported Cases

R v. Chung [2007 EWCA Crim 328]  Triple murder on the Stonebridge Park Estate. (Junior counsel)

R v. Athwal  [2009 2 Cr. App. R 14]  A 70 year old woman, accused of having her daughter in law murdered in India and an alleged "honour killing". The defendant was the oldest woman to be tried for murder in the UK. (Leading counsel).

International Criminal Law/Extradition

The Government of Rwanda v. Charles Munyaneza and others [2009 EWHC 770]  Important extradition case, involving four men whom the Government of Rwanda sought to extradite to Rwanda to face a trial on charges of genocide.

R v. Anthony Sawoniuk [2002 2 Cr. App. R 220]  Defence junior counsel in War Crimes trial involving the only man to be tried n the UK for the Second World War Crimes committed in Belarus in 1942.
