Practice Areas and SpecialisationsMichael is a criminal specialist, having conducted the full range of criminal work including murder trials; specialist fields such as police corruption; major fraud (including SFO work); criminal misconduct in medical professions; drug trafficking and Flying Squad work.
Other work specialisms include third party witness summons and the VAT appeal tribunal work.
Since becoming a QC 75% of his practice has been conducting murder cases at the Old Bailey. His third party witness summons practice is principally related to representing charities holding confidential information who are drawn into the criminal process by either the defence or prosecution. |

Cases of Interest
R v. Kashif Khan and others - Central Criminal Court. Defending in eight month, eight handed double murder by street gang ('the Tooting boys murders'). One of only two defendants acquitted. The case involved submissions as to police handling of accomplice/participating prosecution witnesses. Subsequently acted for convicted co-defendant in the Court of Appeal on behalf of Imran Khan solicitors.
R v. Mark Osbourne - Central Criminal Court. Defending in three month murder. Represented the alleged organiser of drug related machine gun assassination of rival in front of wife and 4 year old son.
R v. Varley and others. Defending large scale class A drugs distribution and money laundering case. Case resolved three weeks into trial by plea negotiation so that lay client received short custodial sentence.
R v. Williams and Langrish - Central Criminal Court. Successful prosecution of murder by repeated stabbing in block of flats.
R v. Michael Hartshorne and others. Defending in three month SOCA case representing first defendant charged with smuggling more than three hundred million pounds worth of cannabis. Eventual conviction on basis of only two million pounds worth.
R v. Southcott and others. Leading defence counsel in four month serious fraud case representing Chairman of Company alleged to have been involved in defrauding MOD with regard to defence contracts: first on indictment.
R v. Sawhney, Karagozlu and others. Leading prosecution junior in 'three counsel' case. Six month multi-handed prosecution of corrupt customs officer and target criminals.
R v. Clark and others. Leading prosecution junior in 'three counsel' case. Three month case relating to systematic corruption, theft and drug dealing within South East Regional Crime Squad.
R v. Kirwan and Williams. Leading prosecution counsel. Allegations of misconduct and computer misuse by civilian employees of metropolitan police allegedly feeding police intelligence to target criminals.
R v. Abo Orff . Leading prosecution counsel in case brought by anti-terrorist squad regarding obtaining funds provided to assist and support asylum seekers, with proceeds being sent abroad to others in Saudi Arabia.
R v. Von Boch und Polach. Prosecution counsel in prosecution of senior legal counsel within Enron for over £200,000 fraud on company.
R v. Sullivan. Prosecution counsel in prosecution of police officer for supplying class A drugs, based upon exposure by undercover journalist working for Sunday Mirror.
R v. Suschetet. Defence junior representing managing director of City bank alleged to have made a bomb threat resulting in closure of London City Airport (defendant acquitted)
R v. Bui and others. Prosecution junior in two month case prosecuting gang murder in West End, with apparent triad connections.
R v. Hood. Defence junior in alleged murder of seriously disabled woman by abusive husband (defendant acquitted).
